Personally, I feel that these crackpots and any credence given to them by the media do more damage than good to the trust people place in their spiritual leaders.
I have no problems with belief in the end of the world (or, to put it another way, simply being conscious of the imminence of one's personal death,) but I do have a problem with these people that think they are privy to divine information the rest of us don't have.
That particular aspect is a clue (to me) that they are not all that right. Why would any divine being feel any need that this (or any other particular) guy should be chosen to tell us the exact date of the end of the world?
It is already well established (to sensible people) that no one of us knows the time of their own death, and, supposing one were to die a couple of hours before the end of the world, then what good is knowing the time of the end of the world?
Thus the lack of knowledge of the time of personal death overrides exact knowledge of the time of the end of the world.
Some people already died this morning, and more will die before 6:00 pm Pacific. What possible good did it do them to be told that the world would end at that time only to have missed it?
But preaching about personal death is not as sexy as preaching about a cataclysmic end of the world, is it?
And yet that, to me, indicates the difference between a responsible spiritual leader and an irresponsible (or nutty) one who merely seeks to be noticed by the public for whatever psychological need or any other material reason.
Instead of telling one's flock to repent at the last minute just before the meteor strikes, a good leader's focus should be on the necessity of leading a moral life every day. Claims of the knowledge of the exact date of the end derail this message.
There are good leaders and bad, and yet I'm sure this guy will have an excuse as to why things did not work out as he claimed, and some of his followers will still bite. He'll still be around for a while.
This, of course is my own opinion, and I mean no insult to whatever your own beliefs are.

VENEZUELA - Obra teatral para niños de Cuarto Año de Primaria
Kiko y Chava acaban de salir del salon de clase. Van caminando a sus respectivas casas.
El Maestro les ha dejado de tarea una investigacion sobre Venezuela y su situacion politica actual.
Kiko no esta muy entusiasmado, porque quiere ir al cine a ver el ultimo estreno.
(Afuera en la calle dos niños caminan por la banqueta, vestidos con uniforme escolar y cargando equipo que indica que son estudiantes.)
Kiko: Oye, entonces quieres ir conmigo al cine? La pelicula va a estar bien padre!
Chava: No, no puedo ir contigo. Que tal la investigacion que nos dejo el Profe? Mañana va a ser el Foro de Discusion y tenemos que estar bien preparados.
Kiko: Pero que hay que discutir? Dice mi Mama que el presidente de Venezuela es un tirano y un mentiroso, y que por eso no lo quieren en este pais ni en el suyo.
Chava: Y que? Eso es todo? Mañana… …solo vas a repetir lo que dice tu Mama?
Kiko: Pues si, no hay nada mas que investigar…
…Aparte yo necesito ir al cine a ver la pelicula de Harry Potter.
Seguro que no me me quieres acompañar? Yo te invito.
(La pelicula debe ser de cualquier sea el personaje o serie favorita del actor para facilitar improvisacion. No precisamente de Harry Potter.)
Chava: No, Kiko. Mañana es dia de clase…
…Ademas, mi Papa no me deja ir.
Kiko: Bueno, pues tu te la pierdes, Chava. Esa pelicula va a estar buenisima.
Chava: OK, Kiko, pues, nos vemos mañana.
Kiko: Bueno, Chavita, nos vemos.
Chava: Bye.
(La entrada a la casa se indica con un cambio de iluminacion o con una pantalla que se elimina.
Chava entra a su casa donde esta su papa leyendo el periodico, con el radio prendido en un comedor o estancia.
En el radio se escucha con volumen bajo algun comentario de noticias, anunciando que el presidente de Venezuela hara un discurso mas tarde.
El papa de Chava esta a la mesa con un periodico donde se ven encabezados describiendo diversas situaciones politicas.)
Radio: (En el fondo) …y eso fue la ultima cancion de Karina.
En la noticias: El presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chavez mas tarde hara un discurso en honor al aniversario de Simon Bolivar.
Y ahora, seguimos con musica de Salsa y Merengues… (Musica sigue.)
Papa: (Bajando el periodico y saludando a Chava.) Hola Salvador, como te fue en la escuela?
Chava: Muy bien, Papa.
Papa: Y en el examen de hoy… …como te fue?
Chava: Hay! Papa! Claro que me fue bien! Pero de todos modos todavia no nos dan los resultados, es muy pronto, ya sabes.
Lo que si tenemos es mucha tarea que hacer para esta tarde: Mañana vamos a presentar un foro de discusion y tengo mucho que investigar y estudiar.
Papa: Ah, si? Que tema les toco ahora?
Chava: Tenemos que hacer una investigacion de Hugo Chavez y de Venezuela.
Papa: Mira, nada mas! Y yo aqui estoy leyendo precisamente eso. Esperame un segundo… (Se levanta de la silla a apaga el radio, y regresa a su silla.)
Sientate, Salvador. (Chava se sienta a un lado de su Papa.) Fijate que aqui, en el periodico, acabo de leer un articulo de los programas de asistencia social que esta organizando Hugo Chávez.
(Procede a describir el articulo que esta leyendo, el articulo puede incluir critica o aprobacion de la actuacion de el presidente de Venezuela. Se inicia un dialogo basado en el articulo. Esta discusion debera durar dos o tres minutos. )
Papa: Estoy viendo que estos programas sociales son bastante buenos y que van a ayudar a mucha gente pobre en el futuro: Por ejemplo, Hugo Chavez, ha iniciado misiones y otros esfuerzos para reducir la pobreza en Venezuela.
Parece que Hugo Chavez esta muy al tanto de la gente de su patria.
Es muy importante que los presidentes latinoamericanos apoyen los servicios sociales de su pais.
De esta manera van a evitar estar dominados por las compañias multinacionales, compañias que vienen del extranjero y que sacan las ganancias del pais.
Eso es parte de lo que significa ser un pais independiente.
Hugo Chavez a ayudado a unir los diferentes bancos y a compañias petroleras de los paises de America Central y America del Sur.
Todas estas cosas son muy positivas, no solo para Venezuela, sino para toda America Latina.
Chava: Esperame Papa, dejame tomar unas notas. (Chava saca un cuaderno y lapiz.)
Papa: Listo? …Y a pesar de esto, también hay grandes problemas en Venezuela.
Por ejemplo existe muy altos niveles de crimen.
Hay mucha corrupción politica y tambien existen elementos de caudillismo – una de las plagas tradicionales de los paises latinoamericanos.
Chava: No entiendo que es eso de caudillismo…
Papa: Los caudillos son lideres populares que tienen oportunidad de manipular a la gente porque son muy carismaticos y tienen mucho apoyo del pueblo. Desgraciadamente hay quienes se aprovechan de esto para manipular a la gente, no siempre de maneras para mejorar su pais.
Chava: Entonces existen las cosas positivas en Venezuela tambien…
…Kiko dice que todo es negativo, que el presidente Hugo Chavez esta echando todo a perder…
…lastima que en parte tiene razon.

(Ya sea con control remoto o levantandose a prender una television antigua, lo que funcione major visualmente para indicar que el papa enciende la TV. Se apagan las luces que iluminan el comedor o estancia y se enciende la luz que indica que el televisor esta prendido. En la pantalla un actor con saco y corbata, y con la bandera de Venezuela tras el gesticula mientras escuchamos un fragmento de discurso previamente grabado…)
Presidente Hugo Chavez: (Este discurso debe estar disponible en Youtube.) 24 de julio, 227 años del nacimiento del Padre Bolívar, día de júbilo para la patria toda y no sólo para Venezuela sino para la patria grande, para estos pueblos de nuestra América que 200 años después de iniciada la revolución de independencia por estos días hace 200 años, hoy igual que ayer siguen luchando, siguen batallando por esa plena independencia y por la creación de la patria humana, de la patria grande, de la patria nueva.
227 años y lo hemos celebrado de esta manera.
Júbilo nacional, en medio del júbilo de las celebraciones del Bicentenario que comenzaron cuando comenzaba este año 2010, que han tenido su apogeo en distintas fechas, 19 de abril aquel día memorable que quedó grabado ya para la historia del siglo 21 que comienza.
En medio del júbilo del Bicentenario conmemoramos Padre Bolívar con los niños cantando y declamando, con nuestros jóvenes entonando las gloriosas notas del Himno Patrio, con nuestro pueblo alegre en las calles celebramos este tu nuevo aniversario trayéndote esa bandera liberada, bordada, hecha con infinito amor en todos los rincones de la patria venezolana.
27 años cumplía Bolívar hace 200 años exactos. Me valgo de la ocasión, compatriotas todos, para reflexionar y enmarcarnos en la perspectiva de la historia.
Porque la historia, como el mismo Padre Bolívar lo señala, ‘es un inmenso vientre que contiene más esperanzas que sucesos pasados y los acontecimientos futuros serán muy superiores a los pretéritos’.
Son palabras de Bolívar.
Así que necesario es que hoy a 227 años del nacimiento del niño Simón Bolívar, del hombre Simón Bolívar, del padre Simón Bolívar, lo coloquemos compatriotas de Venezuela toda en perspectiva histórica.
Miremos el camino largo, ese camino nos trajo aquí 220 años después y miremos hacia adelante el camino por andar, el camino en construcción lleno de grandes posibilidades, pero también lleno de grandes amenazas.
Bolívar cumplía 27 años ¿y dónde cumplió Bolívar 27 años? Un día como hoy, hace dos siglos, estaba en Londres.
Había sido enviado semanas antes en misión especial por la Junta Suprema por el primer gobierno que se organizó en esta tierra, junto con Andrés Bello, a gestionar reconocimiento internacional en aquella capital y más allá en otros países de la Europa…

En escenario hay dos TV pantallas que seran iluminadas conforme se quiera enfocar la accion de la obra.
Hugo Chavez estara en la pantalla numero 1.
El discurso de Hugo Chavez durara dos o tres minutos dependiendo de el material que sea encontrado.
Una vez finalizado el discurso o fragmento del discurso, se escuchara el himno nacional venezolano y se apagara la luz que ilumina a Hugo Chavez.
Simultaneamente se encendera la luz que ilumina la pantalla numero 2, donde se encuentran 2 actores vestidos profesionalmente para noticiero de TV.
En el fondo puede haber una proyeccion o fondo que indica el estudio del noticiero, o simplemente un logotipo que indica el nombre del programa y el numero de canal de TV.
Se sugiere que el programa se llame “OJO CRITICO” Noticiero Canal 9, por ejemplo.
Entre el discurso y el comentario noticiero, puede haber ligero dialogo improvisado entre Chava y su Papa, dependiendo del tema discutido en el discurso.)

Laura Molina: El Presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chavez televisado el dia de hoy, dio un memorable discurso lleno de amor por su patria con intencion de unir al pueblo.
Con sus palabras trato de hacer consciencia que la lucha revolucionaria no es fácil, pero si es necesaria.
Y que mejor ocasión para fortalecer en este año bicentenario, en la fecha de nacimiento del lider Suramericano Simon Bolívar, ahora dignificado con su bandera y sus soldados jurándole que, en sus palabras, “tendran patria.”
Líderes como Chavez y Bolívar, que educan, que inspiran, que nos impulsan a estudiar y aprender, que cuando hablan expresan lo que cada miembro del pueblo piensa, reflexiona y quiere decir; que se elevan por sobre la miseria para alcanzar la gloria de servir a los más grandes ideales de la humanidad; que se identifican con los desposeídos y los despiertan, los levanta y los conducen hacia su propia redención; líderes de esa talla, son necesarios para llegar a la paz mundial.

Chavez aprovecho este discurso para mostrar al pueblo el proceso de formación de Simon Bolivar.
Más allá del entorno y la circunstancias históricas que impulsan las revoluciones, los líderes son aquellos que estudian y poseen ética pura, que saben interpretar la realidad de manera racional, que conocen el alma de los pueblos y poseen una capacidad extraordinaria para comunicarse con ellos.

Este programa se debe mostrar en pantalla mas grande posible. No es deseable que se utilicen las pantallas chicas de TV.
El programa turistica debera tambien tener una duracion de 3 o 4 minutos, pero puede extenderse poco mas, con musica u otros espacios.
Es recomendable que la narracion sea pre-grabada, y se puede utilizar a varios narradores para maximizar la participacion de los estudiantes.)

El dia de hoy visitamos Caracas, bella ciudad de Venezuela con una población de aproximadamente 4 millones de habitantes, Caracas es la capital y la ciudad más poblada de Venezuela.
Está cerca de la costa en el Puerto de La Guaira, pero a una altura de más de 800 metros, por lo cual el clima es muy agradable.
Caracas está ubicada a los pies del Avila, una montaña de 2600 metros, donde se encuentra el parque Avíla Mágica y el Hotel Humboldt al cual se llega por un teleférico.
Es sin duda una de las mejores atracciones turísticas que tiene la ciudad. A una altura de 2100 metros se puede disfrutar de la pista de patinaje y de un clima maravilloso.
Caracas es también un gran centro cultural.
El Museo de Arte Contemporaneo es uno de los más importantes de Suramérica y en el se pueden apreciar obras de gran calidad.

Papa: Muy bien Salvador, pero no te me desveles. Necesitas estar bien descansado para tu foro de mañana.

Chava: Buenas noches, Papa.
(El Papa se levanta y sale del escenario.
Chava se levanta y enciende la computadora, se escuchan los sonidos adecuados, boot-up y tecleado. El sonido de tecleado puede ser en escenario.
Para la pantalla de la computadora se puede utilizar una de las televisiones, pero es mejor seguir el sistema de proyeccion utilizado para el programa turistico.
La investigacion en Internet puede ser acompañada por musica tradicional, audio de videos en Youtube o tener pequeños fragmentos de narracion por Chava, con efectos de sonido indicando que son pensamientos o monologo interno.
Aprovechese para mostrar multitud de imagenes o sonidos relacionados al tema.
Una vez terminada su investigacion, Chava apaga la computadora, le da de comer a su pez en una pecera, o algo por el estilo, se despide de el y sale de la estancia. Bosteza dramaticamente.
Los efectos de luz y sonido indican que pasa la noche y amanece el dia siguiente i.e. canta un gallo.
Una vez encendida la luz, no encontramos en el salon de clase. Chava y Kiko y otros compañeros estan platicando informalmente, de pie, en varios grupos de 3 o cuatro estudiantes. Otros estudiantes siguen entrando al salon de clase.
Kiko le platica a un grupo que se divirtio mucho en el cine, la pelicula estuvo tan emocionante como el esperaba.
Chava le pregunta a Kiko si tuvo tiempo de investigar algo, Kiko se burla que no es necesario, el ya tiene toda la informacion que necesita para el Foro de Discusion.)
Kiko: Estuvo bien padre… Despues Hermione y Harry se encontraron con el dragon rojo, y el dragon rojo les dijo que tenian que adivinar un acertijo… …Pero Harry ya habia leido el diario secreto del mago y ya tenia unas pistas, asi que el dragon tuvo que dejarlos pasar...
…Despues de que pasaron la camara del dragon rojo llegaron al portal magico y alli se les aparecio un espiritu de otra dimension que interrumpio todo…
Chava: …Y cuando tuviste tiempo de estudiar de Hugo Chavez?
Kiko: Si ni siquiera tuve que estudiar nada, que te pasa?
Pero la pelicula estuvo buenisima, dejame te cuento mas…
(Se escucha un timbre y los alumnos rapidamente van a sus asientos, el maestro entra y saluda a todos.
Los alumnos le saludan de vuelta.
El maestro indica que iniciara el Foro de Discusion.
Kiko representara el punto de vista de alguien que tiene una opinion basada en comentarios que le han hecho otras personas, principalmente su Mama.
Hay unos alumnos que lo apoyan. En el guion se indican a cuatro estudiantes, pero se pueden añadir cuantos se gusten con opiniones mas variadas.)
Pancho: Dice mi papa que Hugo Chavez es un grosero y maleducado, que aprovecha su posicion de poder para hacer cosas ridiculas, como eso de cantar canciones populares en television.
Julia: Tambien lo critican que es muy amigote de Fidel Castro, que fue dictador comunista de Cuba.
Kiko: Hugo Chavez es un dictador tambien, ya tiene de presidente mucho tiempo sin que nadie lo pueda quitar.
Y tambien es un mentiroso, que solo esta engañando a su pueblo. Y sus amigos y los que lo apoyan son puros criminales.
Su imagen popular de alguien pobre y humilde es solo un acto falso para engañar a Venezuela y al resto del mundo.
(Algunos estudiantes asienten o aplauden.)
Maestro: Por que piensas eso, Kiko?
Kiko: Eso es lo que dice mi Mama que le dicen en su trabajo.
(Chava presenta un punto de vista que es capaz percibir puntos ambos negativos y positivos, basados en la informacion que obtuvo en discusion con su Papa del articulo, el discurso de la noche anterior, el comentario de los reporteros y el documental turistico que ya se vieron.
Tambien hay alumnos que apoyan a Chava.)
Josefina: Creo que Hugo Chavez esta haciendo algo bueno en Venezuela porque es de los unicos presidentes que se atreven a estar en contra de las injusticias que cometen algunos ricos del mundo.
Hay gente que se queja de como maneja el petroleo de Venezuela, pero el solo esta administrando los recursos del pueblo, y eso es uno de los trabajos que debe hacer como presidente.
Chava: Yo veo que es bueno para Venezuela que Hugo Chavez busque la independencia de la influencia de Estados Unidos, pero Venezuela debe tener cuidado de no sustituir un imperialismo por otro.
Es logico que Hugo Chavez irrite a la gente de los Estados Unidos cuando actua de esta manera… Rechazando la influencia o la intervencion de los Estados Unidos en Venezuela.
Pero esto es necesario para lograr las metas de independencia que el quiere para Venezuela, aun que no le parezca a los Estados Unidos.
Pero tambien es muy importante tener cuidado de no llegar a una situacion en la que el mismo gobierno de Venezuela se heche a perder y que se permitan los abusos de los gobernadores.
Maestro: Y tu por que piensas eso?
Chava: Yo vi que hay apoyo de mucha gente para Hugo Chavez, pero, al igual, tambien hay resistencia.
Por esto es que es dificil saber exactamente que es lo que sucede en Venezuela.
Hay muchos expertos y gente importante de la politica mundial entre la gente que apoya a Hugo Chavez.
Tambien vi muchos comentarios negativos de otra gente que no esta de acuerdo con Hugo Chavez. Por ejemplo, parece que esta de pleito con Estados Unidos y Colombia.
Yo creo que es muy dificil convencer a todo el mundo de que uno es buen presidente, aun que se este haciendo buen trabajo.
Hugo Chavez por lo menos esta convenciendo a unos cuantos que sabemos que si apoyan la democracia y la paz mundial.
(Otros alumnos asienten o aplauden.
Despues de la discusion el maestro inicia un comentario final poco antes de que suena el timbre de recreo.)
Maestro: Muchachos, una de las cosas importantes que quiero que aprendan es que Ustedes tienen la responsabilidad de informarse lo suficiente para formar una opinion educada.
Mucha gente forma un punto de vista solo basado en lo que escucha que dicen los demas.
Si no hay investigacion o un estudio a fondo esa es la unica fuente de informacion que tienen algunos.
Sin embargo, esas fuentes de informacion si existen, posiblemente un poco ocultas y cuesta algo de trabajo encontrarlas.
Pero para tener una vision completa de lo que sucede en el mundo es necesario este trabajo extra.

(La entrada a la casa se indica con un cambio de iluminacion o con una pantalla que se elimina.
Chava entra a su casa donde esta su papa leyendo el periodico, con el radio prendido en un comedor o estancia.
En el radio se escucha con volumen bajo algun comentario de noticias, anunciando que el presidente de Venezuela hara un discurso mas tarde.
El papa de Chava esta a la mesa con un periodico donde se ven encabezados describiendo diversas situaciones politicas.)
Radio: (En el fondo) …y eso fue la ultima cancion de Karina.
En la noticias: El presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chavez mas tarde hara un discurso en honor al aniversario de Simon Bolivar.
Y ahora, seguimos con musica de Salsa y Merengues… (Musica sigue.)
Papa: (Bajando el periodico y saludando a Chava.) Hola Salvador, como te fue en la escuela?
Chava: Muy bien, Papa.
Papa: Y en el examen de hoy… …como te fue?
Chava: Hay! Papa! Claro que me fue bien! Pero de todos modos todavia no nos dan los resultados, es muy pronto, ya sabes.
Lo que si tenemos es mucha tarea que hacer para esta tarde: Mañana vamos a presentar un foro de discusion y tengo mucho que investigar y estudiar.
Papa: Ah, si? Que tema les toco ahora?
Chava: Tenemos que hacer una investigacion de Hugo Chavez y de Venezuela.
Papa: Mira, nada mas! Y yo aqui estoy leyendo precisamente eso. Esperame un segundo… (Se levanta de la silla a apaga el radio, y regresa a su silla.)
Sientate, Salvador. (Chava se sienta a un lado de su Papa.) Fijate que aqui, en el periodico, acabo de leer un articulo de los programas de asistencia social que esta organizando Hugo Chávez.
(Procede a describir el articulo que esta leyendo, el articulo puede incluir critica o aprobacion de la actuacion de el presidente de Venezuela. Se inicia un dialogo basado en el articulo. Esta discusion debera durar dos o tres minutos. )
Papa: Estoy viendo que estos programas sociales son bastante buenos y que van a ayudar a mucha gente pobre en el futuro: Por ejemplo, Hugo Chavez, ha iniciado misiones y otros esfuerzos para reducir la pobreza en Venezuela.
Parece que Hugo Chavez esta muy al tanto de la gente de su patria.
Es muy importante que los presidentes latinoamericanos apoyen los servicios sociales de su pais.
De esta manera van a evitar estar dominados por las compañias multinacionales, compañias que vienen del extranjero y que sacan las ganancias del pais.
Eso es parte de lo que significa ser un pais independiente.
Hugo Chavez a ayudado a unir los diferentes bancos y a compañias petroleras de los paises de America Central y America del Sur.
Todas estas cosas son muy positivas, no solo para Venezuela, sino para toda America Latina.
Chava: Esperame Papa, dejame tomar unas notas. (Chava saca un cuaderno y lapiz.)
Papa: Listo? …Y a pesar de esto, también hay grandes problemas en Venezuela.
Por ejemplo existe muy altos niveles de crimen.
Hay mucha corrupción politica y tambien existen elementos de caudillismo – una de las plagas tradicionales de los paises latinoamericanos.
Chava: No entiendo que es eso de caudillismo…
Papa: Los caudillos son lideres populares que tienen oportunidad de manipular a la gente porque son muy carismaticos y tienen mucho apoyo del pueblo. Desgraciadamente hay quienes se aprovechan de esto para manipular a la gente, no siempre de maneras para mejorar su pais.
Chava: Entonces existen las cosas positivas en Venezuela tambien…
…Kiko dice que todo es negativo, que el presidente Hugo Chavez esta echando todo a perder…
…lastima que en parte tiene razon.

Papa: Ah! Por poco se me olvida! Van a televisar un discurso de Hugo Chavez, que te parece si lo vemos?
(Ya sea con control remoto o levantandose a prender una television antigua, lo que funcione major visualmente para indicar que el papa enciende la TV. Se apagan las luces que iluminan el comedor o estancia y se enciende la luz que indica que el televisor esta prendido. En la pantalla un actor con saco y corbata, y con la bandera de Venezuela tras el gesticula mientras escuchamos un fragmento de discurso previamente grabado…)
Presidente Hugo Chavez: (Este discurso debe estar disponible en Youtube.) 24 de julio, 227 años del nacimiento del Padre Bolívar, día de júbilo para la patria toda y no sólo para Venezuela sino para la patria grande, para estos pueblos de nuestra América que 200 años después de iniciada la revolución de independencia por estos días hace 200 años, hoy igual que ayer siguen luchando, siguen batallando por esa plena independencia y por la creación de la patria humana, de la patria grande, de la patria nueva.
227 años y lo hemos celebrado de esta manera.
Júbilo nacional, en medio del júbilo de las celebraciones del Bicentenario que comenzaron cuando comenzaba este año 2010, que han tenido su apogeo en distintas fechas, 19 de abril aquel día memorable que quedó grabado ya para la historia del siglo 21 que comienza.
En medio del júbilo del Bicentenario conmemoramos Padre Bolívar con los niños cantando y declamando, con nuestros jóvenes entonando las gloriosas notas del Himno Patrio, con nuestro pueblo alegre en las calles celebramos este tu nuevo aniversario trayéndote esa bandera liberada, bordada, hecha con infinito amor en todos los rincones de la patria venezolana.
27 años cumplía Bolívar hace 200 años exactos. Me valgo de la ocasión, compatriotas todos, para reflexionar y enmarcarnos en la perspectiva de la historia.
Porque la historia, como el mismo Padre Bolívar lo señala, ‘es un inmenso vientre que contiene más esperanzas que sucesos pasados y los acontecimientos futuros serán muy superiores a los pretéritos’.
Son palabras de Bolívar.
Así que necesario es que hoy a 227 años del nacimiento del niño Simón Bolívar, del hombre Simón Bolívar, del padre Simón Bolívar, lo coloquemos compatriotas de Venezuela toda en perspectiva histórica.
Miremos el camino largo, ese camino nos trajo aquí 220 años después y miremos hacia adelante el camino por andar, el camino en construcción lleno de grandes posibilidades, pero también lleno de grandes amenazas.
Bolívar cumplía 27 años ¿y dónde cumplió Bolívar 27 años? Un día como hoy, hace dos siglos, estaba en Londres.
Había sido enviado semanas antes en misión especial por la Junta Suprema por el primer gobierno que se organizó en esta tierra, junto con Andrés Bello, a gestionar reconocimiento internacional en aquella capital y más allá en otros países de la Europa…
(Este discurso u otro puede ser una muestra de audio de un discurso actual o puede ser dicho por el actor que representa a Hugo Chavez.
En escenario hay dos TV pantallas que seran iluminadas conforme se quiera enfocar la accion de la obra.
Hugo Chavez estara en la pantalla numero 1.
El discurso de Hugo Chavez durara dos o tres minutos dependiendo de el material que sea encontrado.
Una vez finalizado el discurso o fragmento del discurso, se escuchara el himno nacional venezolano y se apagara la luz que ilumina a Hugo Chavez.
Simultaneamente se encendera la luz que ilumina la pantalla numero 2, donde se encuentran 2 actores vestidos profesionalmente para noticiero de TV.
En el fondo puede haber una proyeccion o fondo que indica el estudio del noticiero, o simplemente un logotipo que indica el nombre del programa y el numero de canal de TV.
Se sugiere que el programa se llame “OJO CRITICO” Noticiero Canal 9, por ejemplo.
Entre el discurso y el comentario noticiero, puede haber ligero dialogo improvisado entre Chava y su Papa, dependiendo del tema discutido en el discurso.)

(Comentario del discurso de Hugo Chavez…)
Laura Molina: El Presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chavez televisado el dia de hoy, dio un memorable discurso lleno de amor por su patria con intencion de unir al pueblo.
Con sus palabras trato de hacer consciencia que la lucha revolucionaria no es fácil, pero si es necesaria.
Y que mejor ocasión para fortalecer en este año bicentenario, en la fecha de nacimiento del lider Suramericano Simon Bolívar, ahora dignificado con su bandera y sus soldados jurándole que, en sus palabras, “tendran patria.”
Líderes como Chavez y Bolívar, que educan, que inspiran, que nos impulsan a estudiar y aprender, que cuando hablan expresan lo que cada miembro del pueblo piensa, reflexiona y quiere decir; que se elevan por sobre la miseria para alcanzar la gloria de servir a los más grandes ideales de la humanidad; que se identifican con los desposeídos y los despiertan, los levanta y los conducen hacia su propia redención; líderes de esa talla, son necesarios para llegar a la paz mundial.

Chavez aprovecho este discurso para mostrar al pueblo el proceso de formación de Simon Bolivar.
Más allá del entorno y la circunstancias históricas que impulsan las revoluciones, los líderes son aquellos que estudian y poseen ética pura, que saben interpretar la realidad de manera racional, que conocen el alma de los pueblos y poseen una capacidad extraordinaria para comunicarse con ellos.

Este programa se debe mostrar en pantalla mas grande posible. No es deseable que se utilicen las pantallas chicas de TV.
El programa turistica debera tambien tener una duracion de 3 o 4 minutos, pero puede extenderse poco mas, con musica u otros espacios.
Es recomendable que la narracion sea pre-grabada, y se puede utilizar a varios narradores para maximizar la participacion de los estudiantes.)

El dia de hoy visitamos Caracas, bella ciudad de Venezuela con una población de aproximadamente 4 millones de habitantes, Caracas es la capital y la ciudad más poblada de Venezuela.
Está cerca de la costa en el Puerto de La Guaira, pero a una altura de más de 800 metros, por lo cual el clima es muy agradable.
Caracas está ubicada a los pies del Avila, una montaña de 2600 metros, donde se encuentra el parque Avíla Mágica y el Hotel Humboldt al cual se llega por un teleférico.
Es sin duda una de las mejores atracciones turísticas que tiene la ciudad. A una altura de 2100 metros se puede disfrutar de la pista de patinaje y de un clima maravilloso.
Caracas es también un gran centro cultural.
El Museo de Arte Contemporaneo es uno de los más importantes de Suramérica y en el se pueden apreciar obras de gran calidad.
Todos los años, Caracas es sede de un Festival Internacional de Teatro en donde se dan cita grupos de teatro de todas partes del mundo.
Para los más pequeños, Caracas cuenta con un entretenido museo, el Museo de los Niños, donde se combinan diversión y educación.

Chava: Papa, todavia no puedo! No he investigado nada todavia!
Dejame buscar informacion en la computadora un rato, por lo menos.
Papa: Muy bien Salvador, pero no te me desveles. Necesitas estar bien descansado para tu foro de mañana.

Chava: Buenas noches, Papa.
(El Papa se levanta y sale del escenario.
Chava se levanta y enciende la computadora, se escuchan los sonidos adecuados, boot-up y tecleado. El sonido de tecleado puede ser en escenario.
Para la pantalla de la computadora se puede utilizar una de las televisiones, pero es mejor seguir el sistema de proyeccion utilizado para el programa turistico.
La investigacion en Internet puede ser acompañada por musica tradicional, audio de videos en Youtube o tener pequeños fragmentos de narracion por Chava, con efectos de sonido indicando que son pensamientos o monologo interno.
Aprovechese para mostrar multitud de imagenes o sonidos relacionados al tema.
Una vez terminada su investigacion, Chava apaga la computadora, le da de comer a su pez en una pecera, o algo por el estilo, se despide de el y sale de la estancia. Bosteza dramaticamente.
Los efectos de luz y sonido indican que pasa la noche y amanece el dia siguiente i.e. canta un gallo.
Una vez encendida la luz, no encontramos en el salon de clase. Chava y Kiko y otros compañeros estan platicando informalmente, de pie, en varios grupos de 3 o cuatro estudiantes. Otros estudiantes siguen entrando al salon de clase.
Kiko le platica a un grupo que se divirtio mucho en el cine, la pelicula estuvo tan emocionante como el esperaba.
Chava le pregunta a Kiko si tuvo tiempo de investigar algo, Kiko se burla que no es necesario, el ya tiene toda la informacion que necesita para el Foro de Discusion.)
Kiko: Estuvo bien padre… Despues Hermione y Harry se encontraron con el dragon rojo, y el dragon rojo les dijo que tenian que adivinar un acertijo… …Pero Harry ya habia leido el diario secreto del mago y ya tenia unas pistas, asi que el dragon tuvo que dejarlos pasar...
…Despues de que pasaron la camara del dragon rojo llegaron al portal magico y alli se les aparecio un espiritu de otra dimension que interrumpio todo…
Chava: …Y cuando tuviste tiempo de estudiar de Hugo Chavez?
Kiko: Si ni siquiera tuve que estudiar nada, que te pasa?
Pero la pelicula estuvo buenisima, dejame te cuento mas…
(Se escucha un timbre y los alumnos rapidamente van a sus asientos, el maestro entra y saluda a todos.
Los alumnos le saludan de vuelta.
El maestro indica que iniciara el Foro de Discusion.
Kiko representara el punto de vista de alguien que tiene una opinion basada en comentarios que le han hecho otras personas, principalmente su Mama.
Hay unos alumnos que lo apoyan. En el guion se indican a cuatro estudiantes, pero se pueden añadir cuantos se gusten con opiniones mas variadas.)
Pancho: Dice mi papa que Hugo Chavez es un grosero y maleducado, que aprovecha su posicion de poder para hacer cosas ridiculas, como eso de cantar canciones populares en television.
Julia: Tambien lo critican que es muy amigote de Fidel Castro, que fue dictador comunista de Cuba.
Kiko: Hugo Chavez es un dictador tambien, ya tiene de presidente mucho tiempo sin que nadie lo pueda quitar.
Y tambien es un mentiroso, que solo esta engañando a su pueblo. Y sus amigos y los que lo apoyan son puros criminales.
Su imagen popular de alguien pobre y humilde es solo un acto falso para engañar a Venezuela y al resto del mundo.
(Algunos estudiantes asienten o aplauden.)
Maestro: Por que piensas eso, Kiko?
Kiko: Eso es lo que dice mi Mama que le dicen en su trabajo.
(Chava presenta un punto de vista que es capaz percibir puntos ambos negativos y positivos, basados en la informacion que obtuvo en discusion con su Papa del articulo, el discurso de la noche anterior, el comentario de los reporteros y el documental turistico que ya se vieron.
Tambien hay alumnos que apoyan a Chava.)
Josefina: Creo que Hugo Chavez esta haciendo algo bueno en Venezuela porque es de los unicos presidentes que se atreven a estar en contra de las injusticias que cometen algunos ricos del mundo.
Hay gente que se queja de como maneja el petroleo de Venezuela, pero el solo esta administrando los recursos del pueblo, y eso es uno de los trabajos que debe hacer como presidente.
Chava: Yo veo que es bueno para Venezuela que Hugo Chavez busque la independencia de la influencia de Estados Unidos, pero Venezuela debe tener cuidado de no sustituir un imperialismo por otro.
Es logico que Hugo Chavez irrite a la gente de los Estados Unidos cuando actua de esta manera… Rechazando la influencia o la intervencion de los Estados Unidos en Venezuela.
Pero esto es necesario para lograr las metas de independencia que el quiere para Venezuela, aun que no le parezca a los Estados Unidos.
Pero tambien es muy importante tener cuidado de no llegar a una situacion en la que el mismo gobierno de Venezuela se heche a perder y que se permitan los abusos de los gobernadores.
Maestro: Y tu por que piensas eso?
Chava: Yo vi que hay apoyo de mucha gente para Hugo Chavez, pero, al igual, tambien hay resistencia.
Por esto es que es dificil saber exactamente que es lo que sucede en Venezuela.
Hay muchos expertos y gente importante de la politica mundial entre la gente que apoya a Hugo Chavez.
Tambien vi muchos comentarios negativos de otra gente que no esta de acuerdo con Hugo Chavez. Por ejemplo, parece que esta de pleito con Estados Unidos y Colombia.
Yo creo que es muy dificil convencer a todo el mundo de que uno es buen presidente, aun que se este haciendo buen trabajo.
Hugo Chavez por lo menos esta convenciendo a unos cuantos que sabemos que si apoyan la democracia y la paz mundial.
(Otros alumnos asienten o aplauden.
Despues de la discusion el maestro inicia un comentario final poco antes de que suena el timbre de recreo.)
Maestro: Muchachos, una de las cosas importantes que quiero que aprendan es que Ustedes tienen la responsabilidad de informarse lo suficiente para formar una opinion educada.
Mucha gente forma un punto de vista solo basado en lo que escucha que dicen los demas.
Si no hay investigacion o un estudio a fondo esa es la unica fuente de informacion que tienen algunos.
Sin embargo, esas fuentes de informacion si existen, posiblemente un poco ocultas y cuesta algo de trabajo encontrarlas.
Pero para tener una vision completa de lo que sucede en el mundo es necesario este trabajo extra.
Parte de este ejercicio es para que Ustedes se den cuenta de esto…

Maestro: Bueno muchachos, es hora de recreo.

THE POLICE – EL MEJOR GRUPO DE LA HISTORIA? O DE LOS 80s? O NINGUNO DE LOS DOS?
...
Manuel "El Toro" Saenz era, en aquel entonces, fanatico de THE POLICE.
Yo estaba explorando la musica desconocida de THE BEATLES.
Extrañamente, no fue hasta despues, en el Tec, donde encontre compañeros con gustos similares.
Extraño, porque gente de mi generacion no estaba disfrutando esta musica.
Paul McCartney seguia grabando sus baladas populares y produjo una pelicula Give My Regards To Broadstreet.
John Lennon recientemente habia sido asesinado pero no antes de haber producido unos albums (con Yoko) que fueron relativamente exitosos y George Harrison todavia tuvo uno o dos exitos que registraron. Hasta tuvo videos en MTV.
Ringo como siempre, seguia trabajando, incluyendo en el cine (Caveman,) pero nunca con el alto perfil de antes.
Alguien me menciono (creo que Ricardo "El Sharky" Lopez,) que segun Saenz, THE POLICE era el mejor grupo del mundo.
Yo, naturalmente argumentativo, (que no quiere decir que tengo buenos argumentos, sino simplemente que me gusta alegar, cosa que me ha metido en problemas en varias ocasiones,) percibi esto como un reto:
Me acerque a Manuel y le dije:
-Asi que tu crees que THE POLICE es el mejor grupo de la historia.
-Pues si.
-Pero como va a ser esto? Apenas llevan un par de años de popularidad, con un par de albums.
Un grupo, como THE BEATLES, lleva toda una carrera musical, desde sus inicios en Liverpool, su absorpcion de las influencias del Rock y Blues Americanos, su gran exploracion de musica y tecnicas en los sesentas.
Incluso se puede alegar por los ROLLING STONES…
-Eso no tiene nada que ver, THE POLICE es claramente el mejor grupo musical de la historia, escucha…
Asi que, amigos, los invito a participar en un viaje en el tiempo:
Los de la Prepa, estabamos todavia en la tarde, no nos habiamos pasado aun al turno de la mañana.
Es el inicio de la era del VCR, pero muchos tenemos ya cable en nuestras casas.
Las computadoras son todavia algo desconocido o inutil, aunque algunos de nosotros estamos cambiando nuestro Atari 2600 por el Atari 5200, Colecovision, Sega Genesis o Nintendo (Pong ya paso a la historia olvidada hace mucho tiempo.)
Todos tenemos nuestra muy util calculadora Texas Instruments, la de las lucecitas rojas.
Todas las muchachas traen sus Jordache o sus Calvin Klein (les quede bien o no... Y ustedes saben quienes son.)
Las camisetas de concierto (esas cosas negras que inciaban a circular y que por un tiempo fueron lo maximo,) eran trofeo y segura evidencia de que alguien fue al concierto de THE ROLLING STONES.
El cabello aun no llega a los ridiculos extremos que despues llegaria.
Definitivamente, ya no estabamos con el cabello largo, estilo hippie, de los Setentas, aunque por alli, todavia daba pataditas de ahogado la popular onda surfa de Ocean Pacific.
Los hombres mas aventados traian su mullet, comenzaban a traer la colita de rata, pero nadie aun se identifica con el NEW WAVE. Por lo menos en Tijuana.
Las muchachas empezaban a usar su cabello hacia arriba con mucho spray (pero, por ejemplo, las cholas todavia no usaban esa pantalla de pelo que usaron solo un poco despues.)
En cuestiones musicales THE POLICE ciertamente estaban en una cresta popular, pero Sting todavia no se nos salia del huacal.
Conocemos Synchronicity, aunque no todos conocen Ghost In The Machine.
Y ciertamente no hemos visto nada del Calypso & Blues de Dream Of The Blue Turtles.
Los CDs eran desconocidos.
Las muchachas llevan su LP de THE GO-GOS para compartirlo en el salon. Todos escuchabamos musica en audio cassette. Algunos tenian su boombox y lo llevaba al Instituto Mexico.
Ya habiamos escuchado la musica proto-punk de BLONDIE. "Proto," porque en Tijuana nunca existio el fenomeno Punk de los 70s. Ciertamente SEX PISTOLS y otros andaban por alli, pero por aca no se escucharon hasta despues.
Surgieron grupos como ASIA, (adorado por Adolfo Noguez,) que hoy en dia ya nadie recuerda, posiblemente ni el.
Eso no es nada, a otros les gusta el jazz suave de Hall & Oates (Estoy hablando de ti, Victor. Como nos pudiste hacer esto!!!)

Manuel "El Toro" Saenz era, en aquel entonces, fanatico de THE POLICE.
Yo estaba explorando la musica desconocida de THE BEATLES.
Extrañamente, no fue hasta despues, en el Tec, donde encontre compañeros con gustos similares.
Extraño, porque gente de mi generacion no estaba disfrutando esta musica.
Paul McCartney seguia grabando sus baladas populares y produjo una pelicula Give My Regards To Broadstreet.
John Lennon recientemente habia sido asesinado pero no antes de haber producido unos albums (con Yoko) que fueron relativamente exitosos y George Harrison todavia tuvo uno o dos exitos que registraron. Hasta tuvo videos en MTV.
Ringo como siempre, seguia trabajando, incluyendo en el cine (Caveman,) pero nunca con el alto perfil de antes.
Alguien me menciono (creo que Ricardo "El Sharky" Lopez,) que segun Saenz, THE POLICE era el mejor grupo del mundo.
Yo, naturalmente argumentativo, (que no quiere decir que tengo buenos argumentos, sino simplemente que me gusta alegar, cosa que me ha metido en problemas en varias ocasiones,) percibi esto como un reto:

-Pero como va a ser esto? Apenas llevan un par de años de popularidad, con un par de albums.
Un grupo, como THE BEATLES, lleva toda una carrera musical, desde sus inicios en Liverpool, su absorpcion de las influencias del Rock y Blues Americanos, su gran exploracion de musica y tecnicas en los sesentas.
Incluso se puede alegar por los ROLLING STONES…
-Eso no tiene nada que ver, THE POLICE es claramente el mejor grupo musical de la historia, escucha…

Los CDs eran desconocidos.

Ya habiamos escuchado la musica proto-punk de BLONDIE. "Proto," porque en Tijuana nunca existio el fenomeno Punk de los 70s. Ciertamente SEX PISTOLS y otros andaban por alli, pero por aca no se escucharon hasta despues.
Surgieron grupos como ASIA, (adorado por Adolfo Noguez,) que hoy en dia ya nadie recuerda, posiblemente ni el.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)
When I first saw this title it brought to mind Robert Crumb's MEATBALL! comix, in which a rain of meatballs falls upon the earth.

There is no way they are not using this initial concept as the basis for their story. Crumb's Meatballs, however stood for a kind of random satori/illumination for some individuals.
That, of course, has nothing to do with this movie.
This movie, featuring the voice work of James Caan, Mr. T and Bruce Campbell, is based on a current Children's book, which my kids are apparently familiar with. I haven't read this one, but I am quite familiar with many other Children's fantasies. They are light, innocuous and there is no sense in trying to work out a deep literary analysis from them.
The movie, however, I believe is a different story, because a dark aspect of American culture is, all of a sudden, garishly presented to the rest of the world to see. In this case what may be a Children's fantasy: having all the junk food available in massive quantities, ceases to be merely that and reveals (not that it was necessarily hidden,) a part of American consumer/waste culture for all eyes to see.
This is a food movie, maybe in the same genre as Tampopo, Babbette's Feast, Mostly Martha, Como Agua Para Chocolate, Chocolat, The Scent Of Green Papaya, Eat Drink Man Woman/Tortilla Soup, etc.
But unlike those movies, instead of the food being presented in terms of its variety or quality, or its enjoyment being presented as a metaphor for general joi de vivre say, the food is merely seen as one more item to be exploited, of obtaining massive amounts of it for consumption.
The food is actually free for all, but ways are quickly found to profit from it.
There is not even a need for this food. Sure, sardines do not present many options for a varied menu, but no one in the island is actually starving or even hungry.
The main intent of the filmmakers/designers/animators was apparently to present CGI food in a way that seemed not only realistic, but appetizing. Other filmmakers have shown food with the intention of presenting it as something to cause disgust, for example some of Svankmajer's short films dealing with food, Tommy's bean commercial, or Cheol-su Park's 301/302.
The food, unlike say, the characters is presented quite realistically. Light, texture and color are all correct, if you were making a commercial for a fast food restaurant, this is exactly how you'd want the food to look.
The sheer mass of food shown in some scenes may still cause some viewers to be disgusted (much like the inside of a garbage can also would.)
I predict we'll see an increase of the use of virtual food in TV commercials, it's just too visually perfect not to be used! Will we be able to tell? Was there a US tie-in campaign with a fast-food chain? Or, was that too obvious? Or, was the grossly overweight mayor parading around seen by the food industry as something no one would want associated with them? It certainly was used in Mexico.
The movie even suffered a strange title change, because of this, now it is called Rain Of Hamburgers there.
Yeah, there is also a story about the relationship of a man with his father... Big deal.
I wonder what the impact of this movie is on Third World countries, where it might be seen by people who are actually hungry, or in communities where food is grown and obtained by means of actual hard work.
In the story food is grown magically, as an accident, and with no effort. Therefore wasting food has no impact on the local economy (or the social psyche.)
The consumers are absolutely divorced from the process of the generation of said magical food, despite the fact that it is a former fishing village, and obtaining food from the ocean was the original basis of their economy.
Yes, it is merely a wishful fantasy much as Willie Wonka is: "Wouldn't it be cool to have all the candy in the world?" But there is a huge difference: This movie is not merely about mass consumption, but also about mass overproduction and mass waste.
The waste is at such a scale that it could not possibly exist without incredible environmental repercussions (which, of course, are ignored by the filmmakers.) The overproduced food, is merely catapulted out of sight in one scene.
We see food fall on the floor and be ignored, we see a giant dam fill with waste food. The dam subsequently fills to the breaking point and overflows, destroys the city and flows into the ocean.
The movie has gotten good comments, much as Kung Fu Panda did. It also has a distinctly different vibe than the Shrek movies or Fish Tale. But I cannot understand why everyone thinks this is a nice movie, and why they have failed to see what is obviously in front of them.
Am I overreacting? Maybe, maybe not.

Fake Films
There was this neighbor kid, Rene, who was a pathological liar (probably still is,) who told us all these wild stories. Some may even have had a basis on reality, I'm sure he had some kind of life when he wasn't spending time with us.
The one movie he told us about, that I remember, was titled SHARK! and it came out just about the time of Jaws. Of course, since he couldn't see Jaws, he made up his own version of it. It featured a little bald guy being attackd by hundred of sharks and chasing them and fighting them while riding on a motorcycle. It took him weeks and weeks to develop the full story and he would tell us little snipets of this little bald guy doing amazing stunts while hunting sharks.
I am also guilty of this, once I became a connoisseur, I would tell people about these weird movies, and describe the most incredible events in them in an exaggerated manner and adding mind boggling stuff in a simple throwaway manner. Of course they did not believe me, but I was simply describing Smoky Mountain Christmas (Dolly Parton in a Snow White role) or Killer Klowns from Outer Space or some other such nonsense or ridiculous premise that actually got made into a movie.
They I would just laugh the whole time as they got to see the movie in amazement.

Images Of Male Fertility Gods In Cinema
There have certainly been lots of male fertility symbols, typically phallic in origin in the past.
If you look for them in art, you will see lots of representations of male fertility, maybe they are not particularily identified or named as an official fertility god, but they function as symbols of one.
All you need to do is look.
I can easily think of pre-Colombian or other American images with giant phalluses.
You will also find them in Indian architecture and art. Unfortunately this art is destroyed or hidden away by modern culture.
I am not a historian, but I can easily extrapolate that if they are hidden or destroyed in the current cultural climate, they are likely to have also been destroyed in the past.
Did the Spanish not destroy most records, art and architecture of the Mesoamerican cultures?
The comic genre devoted to sex (among other adult subject matter) is know as Underground Comix.
Currently, phallic symbols are still used by men. Ties, skyscrapers, cigars, guns, etc. Whether by intent or not is debatable, but ultimately they are interpreted as phallic symbols even after the fact.
Now, as to what I mean by Male Fertility God, obviously one that is officially recognized as one, but also an icon that has taken over the role, or has filled the cultural void in the absence resulting from the disappearance of the religion or cult that worshiped them. In the same way that Santa Claus comes not only from the story of Nicholas of Myra, but also from traditions of Odin, Ruebezahl and Knecht Ruprecht, among others.
The Easter Bunny, (though sometimes seen as female, but often as male,) mentioned earlier becomes a symbol of Spring, birth and fertility, thus a fertility god.
I just finished reading Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett. It is basically a reworking of Midsummer Night's Dream, but set in Discworld.
Of course Oberon and Titania are there, though not mentioned by those names.
On the one had we have the Queen of the Elves and then there is her Husband (played in this photo by Patrick Stewart).
The Husband lives under a mountain with a giant sign of male genitalia, and though the King of Elves is supposed to be similarly endowed, a dwarf comments that he is not half of what he is supposed to be, maybe referring to his general size or maybe his endowment (which makes for a good joke, but not much sense, since he only appears to be, his real nature is something else entirely.)
Here is a similar giant as seen in Religulous:
I can think of two movies featuring the Green Man but can find no good photos: The Green Man (1990) and Gawain and the Green Knight (1973.)
The King appears as a horned giant, and immediately made me think of this drawing.
But also of the many horned hart of Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke:
and in turn of the forest giant, since they are two faces of the same god:
For example the Tororo spirit in My Neighbor Totoro, seems to have a shrine, even if no actual worshippers or cult. Maybe the shrine was for the overall forest and not specifically build to worship/venerate him, though the girls' father seems to imply that.
A forest spirit (or god or demon) that spreads seeds around (and gives them to girls/women) and makes plants sprout and trees grow is not, maybe, a Fertility God, but has to be seen as a spirit closely related to fertility of a kind.
Here I am assuming that Totoro is a male god, though I have no idea if gender even applies to him/her. I know Miyazaki has detailed Totoro's background further, but am not aware of specific discussions of sex.
And while Totoro is probably related to the Mononoke Forest God, at least conceptually, I don't know that Miyazaki consciously intended a connection.
Hellboy II has an intimate connection to Mononoke, in that Del Toro used a similar forest elemental giant:
And also a horned King of Elves/Faerie:
Which makes sense, since both figures are linked to male fertility, although in this case the forest elemental is a separate agent of the King, and not the King himself.
Now, let me point out that I am an idiot, and that it took me this long to see that both aspects of the Shishigami are not merely a Japanese religion/myth conception, but more universal myth figures.
This chain of thought made me start thinking of all the different manifestations of Male fertility gods, which include satyrs, the god Pan, and lead up to the "modern" versions of devils and their connection with goats (horns, hoofed feet, etc.)
This includes the conception of Hellboy himself. Thus the Elf King, and Hellboy are two different aspects of the Male fertility god.
Why are two fertility gods featured in the same movie?
Well, that is simple. Hellboy is named as the Destroyer Of Worlds, which I initially thought meant it in the Catholic sense of bringing the ultimate end of the world and somehow the end of Mankind (and not merely the end of the world as we know it.)
As we see, Hellboy II, not only brings upon the death of the King of Elves, but that of his son and daugther (who happen to be twins.) Hellboy then engenders two twins himself, (did it really take me this long to see this? Duh!)
Thus Hellboy is bringing upon the end of the world of Elves (Destroyer Of Worlds, remember?) while replacing it with a new world of his own progeny. Did the prince not clearly state that he would not be challenged/replaced by someone not of royal blood?
If you recall there is also a fertility goddess or that giant Willendorf Venus during the auction scene. (Of course, Hellboy knocks it down!)
And Hellboy doesn't merely reproduce by himself, he needs Firegirl to do this.
So Female Fertility also plays in all of this, though Male Fertility is featured more prominently.
The difficult thing is trying to figure out what DelToro's intentions are, and whether he isn't simply throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there!
On a different issue, I started to think how Christianity addressed the subject of male fertility.
As I've said the goat imagery is taken care of in representations of the devil, but it is not generally considered a good or positive thing.
I think the image of Christ somehow takes care of it but substitutes the reproduction by way of seed to a reproduction by way of blood.
Maybe the seed and the blood are one and the same thing from a Mythical perspective.
Also, the Lords And Ladies novel reminds us of the Elves' aversion to iron.
With all of that thought on different mythologies I thought it was weird that Christ was killed by iron (nails, spear,) and in this way the Christ myth becomes sort of Faerie-like in that sense.
Since Christ is descended from David, and Solomon, and Solomon was supposed to mess around with genii and efreets and such, could Christ as myth not have had the opportunity to have Faerie blood in him?
I know Christ as alien has been done (Demon/God Told Me To,) but has Christ as Faerie ever been done? Can the thorn crown be seen as an mythic visual evolution of the horns associated with a Faerie King?

I think the image of Christ somehow takes care of it but substitutes the reproduction by way of seed to a reproduction by way of blood.
Maybe the seed and the blood are one and the same thing from a Mythical perspective.
Also, the Lords And Ladies novel reminds us of the Elves' aversion to iron.
With all of that thought on different mythologies I thought it was weird that Christ was killed by iron (nails, spear,) and in this way the Christ myth becomes sort of Faerie-like in that sense.
Since Christ is descended from David, and Solomon, and Solomon was supposed to mess around with genii and efreets and such, could Christ as myth not have had the opportunity to have Faerie blood in him?
I know Christ as alien has been done (Demon/God Told Me To,) but has Christ as Faerie ever been done? Can the thorn crown be seen as an mythic visual evolution of the horns associated with a Faerie King?

Here in California there is not much of a Maypole tradition, but I've been at some Renaissance Festivals where Maypole dances get pretty wild, Panic and Saturnalia all rolled into one.

This is the other side of the coin, and I was thinking of this while lying in bed this morning. This is the first go and I'll polish it up during the next few days, but I wanted to put it down.
I ended the previous article on the Easter Bunny, which is fitting, since it represents an emasculation of sorts of Male Fertility Gods. In general, maybe in Western or American culture the Fertility Gods have gone underground. They are still there, but in hiding.
Highly iconic fertility images (horns) are no longer used very often, but the Superhero as a Male Hero or God is still there. However, the Superhero is strangely lacking in virility.
Yes, we still have James Bond, and we still have Captain Kirk, but for the most part the Superhero is expected to behave in a chaste manner. I can quickly mention a few examples: Superman II, shows Superman having to renounce his powers to be able to engage in sexual activity.
The Hulk, sidesteps the sex issue in his new movie. While the scene is funny and adequately worked into the story, it reinforces the adolescent (read chaste or immature, your choice,) nature of the hero.
Another example is the White Cowboy in Rustler's Rapsody, who loses his mojo if he engages in sex (read, if he matures.) In a way this example relates to the myth of Galahad (from The Once And Future King, I haven't read Morte D'Arthur) who is so pure that he ceases to be human, and becomes almost angelic.
The nature of Galahad is, however, misunderstood in Western Cinema, since Lancelot did not need to be that pure to excel at being Arthur's champion. Remember, he was boning Guenevere all that time.
So, do heroes need to be chaste? I say no to that. I say that the modern chaste hero is more a result of Puritanical influence than out of any actual need of heroic purity.
The Greek heroes certainly were not pure. And I've already mentioned Lancelot.
The other option for the existence of this perpetual adolescence is a denial of Death, as I've mentioned in another thread. An attempt at a denial of Death brings about a denial of growth in addition to a denial of maturity.
La petite mort refers to the period after orgasm (sex.)
And General Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove denies women his "essence," for some reason or other, but likely related to adolescent fears of death.
Is it that by engendering a child, you are thereby creating your replacement and thus become obsolete? Possibly that as well, but it doesn't cease to be an immature fear.
I am looking at maturity in two different ways. One implies reproduction. A seed is not mature till it is able to reproduce. Thus these heroes, stand-ins for Male Fertility Gods, are immature till they show an ability to reproduce.
James Bond has no kids. Both Indiana Jones and James T. Kirk are cheated into maturing. They engage in adolescent behavior their whole lives.
They have kids and are not even aware of it, thus show no growth or maturity. (And here we go full circle, since Kirk's surrogate, Picard, played by Patrick Stewart is shown as Oberon above.)
Over the course of several movies none of these, or Superman, or Batman, or Spiderman ever truly mature.
The other aspect is that these superheroes are born out of adolescent fantasies of empowerment, thus by origin, immature.
Witness attempts at allowing growth and maturity for the Superheroes in Chasing Amy's scene with Stan Lee, by acknowledging their sex lives.
In Superman II he loses his super powers by engaging in adult activities (maturing) and regains them by "erasing" the events. In Superman Returns, the writers have a dilemma of sorts, in that they acknowledge these events, but Superman becomes, then, a cuckoo, in addition to an irresponsible, absent, immature father.
I cannot imagine George Reeves' Superman ever doing any of this. His Superman was always very fatherly to begin with, except, of course that he is TV celibate (immature.)
Hellboy, refreshingly, matures over the course of two movies. And, if you discount the first film, he grows from child to mature adult in only his second film, resulting in two offspring.
I think this has to do with Guillermo Del Toro's own maturity as an artist, see, for example, his concerns regarding children in Mimic, El Espinazo Del Diablo, but also due to his status as an North American and Hollywood outsider.
The Puritanical influence is minimal in his artistic/creative makeup.
So where are the Fertility God icons? The answer to that is that partially this function has been relegated to the movie stars themselves, their view by the public as Sex Symbols in a way takes care of this, even if as sex symbols they barely take care of the reproduction aspect.
They are very deficient as Fertility God icons.
The other option is to look underground. Take a look at Stag or Adult Films (hey.. ...stag, there is that horn imagery again!) The Adult film industry has never gone away. It simply lies beneath the surface. And the actors and actresses main cultural job is to function as the priests and priestesses of the modern Fertility Gods.
Every once in a while (Flesh Gordon) we still get a genre movie that is simply a silly celebration of virility and sexuality.
Maybe this underground aspect of fertility gods has always been there.
I don't doubt it.
There certainly are private collections and museums of historic sex related ephemera, but they remain obscure and hidden.
I do acknowledge that comics, a different media than film, has allowed the superheroes to mature, have children and die. Superman, for example has done all of these.
But even comics fail to address proper or realistic aspects or fertility, for example, Superman is an alien with different gene plasm than that of a human being, thus would not be able to reproduce. Also his stories fail to address the Man Of Steel, Woman Of Kleenex aspect of said reproduction.

Los Cronocrimenes (a.k.a. Timecrimes) 2007 - Film Review
 Los Cronocrimenes (2007) A time travel story very much in the vein of Memento, and if you are familiar with Heinlein's All You Zombies, or By His Bootstraps, you pretty much know what to expect, storywise. However, the movie is a tight little, enjoyable, thriller. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmi3OY7cQfA This is Heinlein's Worm Of Ouroboros theory. As far as I know it's the first time it's been done on film, but there are plenty of literary antecedents. The "plot hole" is no plot hole at all, it is simply your typical time travel paradox, which no one really wants to address, even Dr. Who tries to stay away from them at all costs. In Stainless Steel Rat, the simple act of the first ever, initial trip thru time disrupts the continuum enough to generate something even worse than this. Once a working time machine is built it is inevitable that it will be used, even if only to test it, or to travel thru time and end up stepping on a butterfly (The Sound Of Thunder.) They only way to avoid it is never to attempt time travel or to never build a working time machine. The "plot hole," that is, showing the time travel paradox is the entire reason for the film, or for stories like Bradbury's, Heinlein's or Fredric Brown's. The character here becomes a willing slave of time, in part because he is told he must be. Yet if he did not do that he could possibly have avoided everything that happened, depending on which theory of time travel you look at. If you believe that there are small deviations in the story, than the answer is that he could have avoided all of it. If you believe that there are no changes then he is already a time slave, as are all of us. In a nutshell let me describe Robert A. Heinlein's All You Zombies: Girl is born and abandoned in an orphan home. You can say there is a plot hole there, but you'd be missing the point. Causality no longer works in a conventional sense since we are not dealing with normal time flow. The whole thing is not a conventional story, it is an exercise where the author attempts to study (probably) the most extreme time paradox possible. There are some time travel stories that feature "Time Police" who go around trying to fix paradoxes that time travelers get themselves into. When they fix a time mistake, they sometimes end up with little time loops isolated from the overall time stream. This movie describes just such a leftover loop. If you do not see the cause of it all, it may be just because it's been erased already by yet an additional travel thru time. The cause has been erased, it no longer exists, and the effects of the error have been sealed away on its own little time loop. I'm am not saying that the makers even intended this. But if you need it, there it is. In Dark City, you have a similar situation. There is no beginning, because there is no memory of one (the memory was erased.) You can go outside the story and try and figure something out, but the story itself will not give you a solution to what is, in effect, already unsolvable. Jack Finney (From Time To Time, Time And Again) came up with a neat trick, he allows Time to heal itself of paradoxes. You are allowed to go back and kill Gramps, but then you cease to 'exist,' and the time stream changes. People who knew you forget you or events that relate to you, yet, even though you no longer 'exist,' some might have feelings such as deja vu concerning you and the events surrounding you. Someone outside of the time stream is still allowed to remember you. But Gramps remains dead. According to Finney's version of time travel, this guy could have been free to do or not do whatever he wanted. He would have had to live with the consequences, but would not have disappeared nor have the Universe disappear with him if he did not attempt to slavishly follow the memories he had. Fredric Brown explored all the different options for time travel in his short short stories. Back To The Future addresses the matter in a ridiculous way, McFly starts to disappear little by little so that he has an opportunity to fix the paradox. And yet, the rules allow him to change the future, and go back to a new life, where the possibility of him existing simply because his parents got together again (for the second time,) somehow does not get eradicated. What are the chances that even after that change in life, the parents had sex at the same time, with the same resulting egg and sperm that would result in Marty a second time? I don't remember any SF fan being bothered by this enough to deny the Nebula Award to the movie. Yes, there is a paradox, and by its very nature there is no solution. As I've said, other authors shy away from them. You basically have two alternatives, simply restructure the events so that effect follows cause (The Time Travelers, where you still get the resulting time loop,) or have Hector never meet himself (The Time Machine, which hardly explores the concept of time travel, they might as well have just had the guy make a spaceship that goes to the Morlock planet.) But, then, you don't get to blow the viewer's mind... The Terminator series, Back To The Future series all deal with paradoxes, and no one seems to complain. The artistic choice to present the paradox openly is a brave and valid one in my opinion. Otherwise you get cheated out of the real monsters (Mark Of The Vampire, Scooby Doo.) Also, don't miss the short 7:35 En La Manana included in the DVD, it's a neat little comment on musicals and movies vs reality. Will have some more comments when I finish watching it. --- Ok, I finished watching it, and here are my final comments. I am very impressed by it. The story can be read on several different levels. Some comments have been made that the decision to present the paradox in this manner is somehow an artistic mistake. I do not think so. The authors are using a language that is well known in the SF readership community. In any event, the whole time travel thing is nothing more than a MacGuffin. The authors follow their own rules and don't cheat the audience. They are logically consistent. So I have no problem with the paradox. The important aspect of the story is not the external time travel paradox that is presented, but the internal changes it provokes in its main character. The character Hector is presented in three distinct stages. Stage One in which he is told the universe is what it is and he cannot change his destiny, and where he believes this so. Stage Two, which is an intermediate stage where he begins to suspect that he might be able to change his life destiny, but in the meantime is running around trying to catch up with events and still attempting to follow the rules. And Stage Three in which he realizes he must become responsible of his destiny (there are no rules,) he must pay a high price for being responsible, but there is not much of a choice since the result of being irresponsible is an even bigger price (it does however come the added trade-off comfort of knowing he is not responsible for it; Karma, Destiny, the Universe or God is.) So which is it, do you let the Universe alone and claim you are not responsible for whatever becomes of it? Or do you take responsibility and live with the choices you must make? In the process of the story we also see what might be construed as the effects of a casual fling in the life of a(n apparently) happily married character, and the steps (and high price that must be paid) to resolve it. Yes, the story is about a crime, but in reality it is no more criminal than the irresponsible restructuring of the universe that is created by Marty McFly in the Back To The Future film, or the Tales From The Darkside, The Word Processor of the Gods (1984) episode, it is more like the hard decision that the Mom must make in The Good Son. |
